Laser Hair Removal: Yay or Nay?

I was watching that TV show Kimora Lee Simons: Life in the Fab Lane tonight and on the show Kimora was getting laser hair removal. What-d-ya-know but my SO tells me that I have a message about winning something from that bridal show I went to this past weekend. I check the message to find out that I won a $300 gift certificate to get a laser hair removal treatment. Wow! Cool, right!? It would be except the thought of laser hair removal kinda scares me. Just what do they do to your skin anywho to make it hairless? Doesn't the whole process sound like something could so easily go wrong? I know...I'm paranoid.

As you know, I value your opinions, so please vote on my poll, and if you have a moment, leave me a story about you or a friend who's gotten the treatment or heard one way or the other if they're safe. I'd love to hear about your personal opinions and/or experiences. Thanks so much! :)

Hi! I am in the process of getting laser hair removal (I've gone for 3 treatments) and so far while I see significant hair removal, the process really hurts.

I recommend you go to a doctor, not spa to get it done. Doctors have laser machines where they can control the strength of the laser, unlike at spas where there is only one level of intensity.
Plus doctors can perscribe you special numbing cream (which is needed) to use before hand. I've heard that the machines spas use don't hurt at all - or very much, but they also aren't very effective.
Hope this helps :)

The only thing with laser hair removal is that you have to keep going back for more until the whole process is over. I'm not sure that $300 you won would even cover all of that, so just keep it in mind. That may be a session or two, but you may require up to 5 or 6 for the whole treatment. Of course, if you have the extra cash to spare to complete all treatments, it would be awesome! No more shaving!! :)

Yeah, by the time you're done, you're talking $1,500 - 2000 on average, depending of course where you live. But, depending on the area you get done and your sensitivity, it should be relatively pain free and worth every penny.

I know so many people who have tried laser hair removal, on various parts of their body! My roommate in college did her underarms, a friend from high school recently removed all her excess facial hair this way, and I have a friend who even did her bikini area! Although all of them admitted to it being a somewhat painful procedure, all of them do not regret it in the slightest, and are delighted with the results. They all said, too, that even now that they know about the pain, they would do it again.

Since it's true about the having to go back several times to get all the hair, I'd go for a small area, depending on how hairy you are! UPPER LIP! I would love to zap my upper lip hairs with a lazer :D

Good luck if you DO decide to go ahead with it, and let us know how goes it! :D

yay.
Originally I only planned on doing my underarms, but during my first visit I knew I wanted to do my bikini too because the procedure was quick and far less painful than I had expected. Shockingly, it only took about 15 minutes for both the underarm and the bikini areas together!

The laser technician, Cleo, was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything I should expect. I was mostly confused on how the process worked, and she explained that the light of the Candela laser she was going to use targets the hair follicle pigment in its growth (anagen) stage and then it damages the hair shaft and root, causing subsequent regrowth to be finer and lighter. This process doesn't actually remove the hair but instead, singes it. The singed (treated) hair falls out in one to two weeks. Since all hair grows in three stages, the targeted hair has some regrowth, but these hairs will be finer and lighter than before. She also instructed that, between treatments, I could only shave the areas being treated. This worried me, but as it turned out, I had so little regrowth after the first visit, shaving was perfectly adequate.

You right, the laser machines helped a lot they controlled the strength of the laser, unlike at spas where there is only one level of intensity. So i can also suggest that its better to go on the doctor.Keep up the good work.
