Work Chic: Staying Simple

Here's what I wore to work today:

The thing I love about these types of dresses is how deceptively comfy they are. They are super classy and def appropriate for work, while giving you a day of working in comfort and style. Remember, if you're wearing a wrap dress or V-neck with a super deep V, be sure to pair with a cami to keep your look work-appropriate. How you wear it after hours is all up to you!

How-To: Make a Bubble Skirt Work-Appropriate

I got this bubble skirt on a super-sale when a local boutique was closing...about 2 years ago. I remember thinking that the whole bubble skirt idea would never last so I was glad that I was getting my trendy tidbit about 75% off, but who knew it would still be around? Last week, I decided to try to wear my bubble skirt to work:

I think what makes this outfit ok for work is
1. the skirt is black - no flashy patterns or uber-bright colors
2. the skirt is length-appropriate and hits just at my knee
3. simple, classic pieces finish the outfit - black, round-toe pumps and a 3/4 length, simple off-white sweater
4. simple accessories - I have gold, hoopy earrings on...although you can't see them in the photo. Now that I'm thinking about it, though, I really should have worn my Wilson Leather black/gold snakeskin-style bangle...oh well.

Prepalicious Pretty

I love this pretty, little cardigan for many reasons:
1. It's floral
2. It has a turqoise background (my fave color)
3. It's super sparkly w/ lots of fun sequins

You can't really see all the sequins in this photo, but they go all up and down the front, mid section of this cardigan. Even the buttons have a bit of shine to them. I got lots of looks today at work - not that I was trying to, I just think people couldn't help but look because as I walked the various sequins would catch the light and flash in people's eyes. Sorry guys if I blinded any of you today...lol.

Work Chic: Keeping Cool - Summer 2007

Even though my office may be set to "Refrigerate," I still need to stay cool whilst walking between buildings from meeting to meeting. White is supposed to be a good summer color to wear as it helps reflect heat (black absorbs it), so I've been trying to wear as much white as possible. Luckily, I happened to score this lovely BR skirt on a serious sale a couple years ago. I think I paid only $20-30ish for it!

Lady's Day in the Park

This outfit reminds me of something a lady would wear to the park. Perhaps you have to see this skirt in person, but it's just so feminine. I especially love how flowy it is - it has this little silk sections that lay over the main skirt section, but can catch the wind and swirl about while you're walking:

The cardigan set is classic chic and the bows on the peep toe pumps add extra femininity.

So Busy This Week!

Some weeks, you're too busy to do laundry or spend time picking out outfits. That's when you have to go to your staples. For me, I like a simple one-toned top paired with dressy skirts or pants. Of course, with this super-hot weather we've been having lately, I went with a skirt for this outfit. The lace cami and vintage necklace keep the look from being too, too simple.

Casual Chic - Summertime Work

I don't know what it was with my shoes yesterday, but do you ever wear shoes that make you feel like you're developing blisters right on the balls of your feet? I knew that I'd be wearing flats today, and luckily, this skirt looks fab with my J Crew flats:

I love wearing these flowy skirts to work - I feel like I'm wearing pajamas except these skirts are often work-appropriate! I love these skirts because they're so versatile. You can dress these skirts up with heels or dress them down with sandals. You can dress them up with a sleek black top or dress them down with a simple tank top. Either way, you should have one in your wardrobe. I especially like the ones Banana Republic does.

Preppy/Work Chic a la Lilly

I'm feeling a bit under the weather right now, so for me, when I'm sick, I like to dress comfy...as cute as possible, but comfort usually starts to take over my style...haha. For today, I wanted to wear layers (to stay warm!) and luckily, I have this fab Lilly Pulitzer sweater (one of several items I bought when a store closing had their Lilly marked at 75% off!)

I've also been meaning to purchase a tote for carrying work folders, documents, etc from meeting to meeting for the day J-O-B. I want to get one in red (power color), but I remembered today that I have this awesome lime green tote that I (sadly) bought last year and haven't used! Eeks! Glad I was able to use it today...I think this'll do the job for awhile!

New-Grad Must-Haves: Get Work Chic

If you just graduated from college, if you're a junior getting an early jump on post-graduation prep, or if you're just a type-A high-schooler getting ready for your future, here are some must-haves for when you graduate college and are getting ready to start your career:

Suit

If you're looking for a typical office-job, you're going to need a suit, if not to wear to work, at least to wear to your interviews. When I graduated, people told me not to get a black suit because it was boring, but the truth is, black is always a great choice for work. If you can afford it, get a three-piece suit: blazer, pants, skirt. While you won't wear a full-blown suit to work (in most offices), you'll definitely get great use out of each suit piece, worn separately.

This suit - Blazer and Trousers (image and item) - Banana Republic in lightweight wool. I love BR clothes - they're well made, fit well, and look really polished.
If you can't afford BR, I also like The Limited - they have nice suits for reasonable prices.
If you can afford more, definitely get a Brooks Brothers suit. They're making lower rise pants now for those who prefer pants that sit lower on the hip, but overall, their suits are in classic cuts that are sure to last you years.

Shoes

Good shoes are a must. Don't skimp on shoes or you'll be wishing you never did. Remember, even if you work in an office, you'll be on your feet all day, even if it's just getting up to grab coffee, walking to the printer, walking a block to grab lunch, it adds up, so a little extra money put towards your tootsies can go a long way. I don't mean you need to go get a pair of Christian Louboutins (of course, if you can afford them, go for it), but you can easily get a nice pair of shoes for less than $150. If you're not used to wearing heels, I'd stick to less than 3" heels. The shorter the heel, the easier they'll be to walk in and the more comfy they'll be, and actually, in some super-formal offices, too-tall heels are considered inappropriate.
These shoes are by Cole Haan (image and item) - Jessika Slingbacks
If you can't afford these, try Nine West
If you can afford more, try some other Cole Haan styles (they have lots of great, classy shoes) or J Crew

Button-Down Shirt

You'll need a button-down shirt to wear with your interview suit. Blue is traditional and the most popular color I see by far at the bank (where I work right now). Maybe it's because I work in the Corporate Investment Banking division, but half of the people I pass are in blue button-downs with black pants. Other colors are acceptable, especially for us girls, but if you can only afford one or two, definitely get one in blue. Now, you can buy a button-down from just about anywhere, but I'm in love with the non-irons by Brooks Brothers. Now, maybe it's because I'm not a fan of ironing, but it just seems that whenever I get a regular (non-non-iron) shirt, it never comes out the same after I wash it. Meanwhile, everytime I wash my Brooks Brother's shirts, they look crisp and fresh as soon as I take them out of the dryer. Oh, and if you do get these, don't leave them in the dryer or they will wrinkle - hang them up as soon as they're done drying and you'll be good to go.

This non-iron button-down shirt (image and item) by Brooks Brothers
I don't have any other recommendations on non-iron button-down shirts (b/c I've never seen them anywhere else...at least not for women), but trust me, these tops are well-worth the investment. Look for when they do their "3 for..." sale to get sweet deals on a trio of tops.

Purse

A simple purse is not necessarily a "true" must-have, but it is in my book. You don't want to carry your fave fuzzy-pink purse that you took to all the frat parties into the office. Remember, you want to look professional because you want to be treated like a professional. Get a simple black purse to start and then work your more-fun-totes into the work-week once you get a better feel for what's appropriate.

This purse by Perlina (image and item from Nordstrom.com)
Also, try Nine West, Cole Haan, Kenneth Cole, and TJ Maxx

The above picks are just my personal recommendations, but there are always exceptions to the "rules". For example, if you're going to apply for a more artistic job, you may get to use more of an "artistic license" while putting your work outfits and interview outfits together (you may even need to to let your personality shine through).

Those low on funds can take advantage of the summer sales going on now to stock up on work-appropriate apparel. Trust me, when I graduated, I was b-r-o-k-e, so these type sales are great for getting new career gear.

Anywho, looking professional will get you in the door...once you're hired, keep a look out to see what other ladies around the office are wearing and try to match their level of formality. Too informal is bad, but so is too formal. Just get a feel for the environment and you'll be good to go. If you want, you can click on the "Business Casual" label here in the blog to see some outfits that I wear to work, though you'll have to style yours based on your own office environment.

Work Sweet, Work Chic

I love how this dainty, lacy, off-white blouse adds extra feminity to any bottom, from jeans to work-appropriate slacks. The satin bow gives the girly look an extra boost of "sugar and spice and everything nice":

Simple Outfit - Sassy Sash

So, I brought a friend by the shop where I got my Vera Bradley on sale, and lo-and-behold, they had new stuff on sale! While my friend shopped the totes, I started browsing the new sale items - flip flops, belts, sashes, scarves, cell phone cases, dog collars. I know you'll all be shocked when I tell you that I found a couple things to buy, including this sassy sash:

My simple black & white outfit gets a flash of color with this floral Vera Bradley sash in Botanica. Accessories are a great way to dress up the most boring business casual outfit. I also managed to pick-up a Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon to stick to my top while I was out for lunch - they were handing them out on the street, and not only do I #1 love to support Breast Cancer, but #2 it matched my outfit! I mean, I would have worn it either way, but I thought it was a funny coincidence.

Haute Flats For Work-Chic Style 2007

Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to find cute flats for work?

Here are some simple but super cute options to make your business casual outfit a tad more on the comfortable side, while still maintaining your style:

Report "Cassie" Peep-Toe Flat - $49
Image and item from macys.com
Not quite as dressy as the next two, but certainly easier on the pocket.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Open Toe Ballet Flat - $97.95
I love MK, not to mention you can rock these metallic cuties with black or brown - who doesn't like a lil' extra versatility?

Phoebe Leather Peep-Toe Flats - $148
I actually have these in brown and I love them! Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Most definitely - they are so chic and comfy!

BR Does Business Chic

Anyone remember this outfit from a post about Banana Republic for work awhile back?

I suppose most of you already knew I'd buy the top from this outfit, but I paired it with a white Banana Republic skirt from last season and neutral linen peep-toe pumps (also BR last season) to re-create the Banana Republic outfit I was drooling over all pre-spring:

Hmm...the outfit looks better on the model...but oh well, I just love how feminine and spring-y this outfit is! At least I was comfy all day! Wearing this skirt is like wearing PJ's to work...and who doesn't want that?

Nautical Business Casual

Anyone else out there as much a fan as I of the nautical theme! I loved it last year and I love it this year again! I put this lil number together for the office:

It's super simple, but I think the scarf gives it a lil something extra. I added the green tote for a splash of color. There's something about blue and green, especially navy and lime!

Sping-Inspired Business Look

Spring is here, and in honor of the season and warmer weather, I decided to start my work week with a spring-inspired business look:

It's an all Banana Republic outfit - I normally don't like to do outfits completely from one store, but I simply couldn't resist. I'm a big fan of accessories, so when I saw this scarf on bananarepublic.com, I knew I had to have it...and an outfit to go with it, of course. Would I be a true shopaholic if I didn't get an entire ensemble?

Anywho, for any gals out there shopping for some great work-gear, I highly recommend these wide leg pants. They're super comfy and the cut is awesome - very work-sppropriate! Oh, and the top is a great purchase - I have it in a couple colors. It's lightweight, sooo soft, and a steal at only $38.

Oh, and if you decide to shop for any of these pieces, I recommend trying the stores first - they're almost all sold out online...eek!

Chic Black & White Dress - Cheap!

Hey Ladies...like the Anthropologie dress I blogged about yesterday but don't like the price tag? Yea, I don't have any Anthropologie dresses yet for a reason, but there are other super cute dresses out there! Maybe not with the exact same color or the same shape, but def with the same "chic factor!" Check out the sweet dress I found at The Limited recently:

Black & White Rose Dress by The Limited - A great purchase for only $68

This dress is an awesome piece to add to your wardrobe because it's so versatile! Just remember that dress is a tad on the low-cut side, so if you're planning on wearing it to work or to meet the parents or to go on a nice date, do remember to add a cami to the look to keep you looking super classy.

Pair with a nice blazer to make this look business casual appropriate.

Punch up the look with bright shoes or a bright purse (or both)!

Bring on Banana Republic - Work Gets Chic

I think it's official...I'm addicted to Banana Republic. I guess for where I am in life, it makes sense...BR is one of few stores that offers clothing you can wear for work and play. Mostly for work though - the styles are youthful while still being super classy. Especially considering the majority of my time is spent at work, and I've just started a new project, having nice clothes for work is really important. For chic work clothes, I turn to BR...here's what I'm craving:

A chino suit is always a great investment. The pieces will work well individually or worn as the full suit look. The top shown in this outfit isn't exactly work appropriate for most offices, but a suitable top is easily found elsewhere on the BR site

This outfit screams ladylike. I love the flowy skirt and puff-sleeve blouse together. This look would be great for another day at work or for a daytime date.

This outfit is all about chic - it couldn't be more simple - no patterns, no embellishments, but the simplicity of the outfit is what really draws me into this look. I especially love the wide-leg pants.

Although far from work-appropriate, I really love the look of this outfit for a casual summer day or simple vacation outfit. You may be able to pull off the top at the office, but why worry about that when you can enjoy it on your time off.

Business Casual Chic

Hello darlings!

I'm planning on doing a "How to dress business casual" post in the next couple weeks, inspired by my latest project. I'm a consultant by day, and my company sends me on various projects, and this past Wednesday, I started a new project at a bank, so you may notice more "business casual" outfits on SA. Fear not, the fun outfits will still be coming out in full force...they just may have to share the spotlight with some work-inspired looks.

Here's what I wore today:

Top - Gap
Sweater - Banana Republic
Pants - Banana Republic
Boots - Ann Taylor Loft
Necklace - D Celestine Limited (click for details) - it's sold on the site, but I can make another one at request
